JPG to PNG Converter — Free Online

Convert JPG files to PNG when you need a format that supports transparency, survives repeated editing, or is required by a tool that refuses JPG. The PNG step adds no further compression loss. Everything happens locally on your device.

How to use the jpg to png converter

  1. Add your .jpg or .jpeg files to the drop area above.
  2. Each image is decoded and re-saved as a lossless PNG in your browser.
  3. Download the PNG files individually or all at once.

Converting to PNG does not improve the image

This is the most common misunderstanding about the conversion, so it is worth stating plainly: PNG is lossless, but converting a JPG to PNG does not restore anything. Whatever detail the JPG discarded when it was first saved is gone, and the PNG simply records the compressed result perfectly — including every artefact, halo and block. You get a much larger file containing exactly the same picture.

What lossless does buy you is protection from here on. Each time a JPG is opened, edited and saved it loses a little more, so if an image is about to go through several rounds of cropping, annotation or retouching, working in PNG stops that decay accumulating. Convert for the workflow ahead, not to fix the past.

When it is genuinely the right move

Three cases justify the extra size. The first is editing: annotating a screenshot, adding arrows and labels, or compositing, where repeated saves would otherwise degrade the file. The second is a strict requirement — some print shops, publishers, submission portals and embedded systems accept PNG only, and arguing with the validator is not an option. The third is that you need an alpha channel; the JPG has none, but a PNG can carry the transparency you are about to add when you remove the background.

Outside those, keeping the JPG is usually correct. A 3 MB photo becomes 15–25 MB as PNG for no visible gain, which is slower to email, slower to upload and no better to look at. If the goal is a smaller file rather than a lossless one, JPG to WebP is the conversion you actually want.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG online free?
Drop .jpg or .jpeg files in and download PNG. This JPG to PNG converter adds no further compression loss and never uploads your photos.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No converter can undo JPG artefacts. PNG preserves exactly what is there without new loss — useful before editing, not a magic upscale.
Why is the PNG much larger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless; JPG throws data away. Photos often grow several times when you convert JPG to PNG — normal, and WebP may be a better size trade-off.
Will JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. Conversion does not remove backgrounds. The PNG keeps every pixel; cut-outs need an editor or a dedicated remove-background tool.
Does JPG to PNG remove EXIF location data?
Yes. Canvas re-encoding drops EXIF including GPS. Rotation from EXIF is applied so the image is not sideways.
Can I batch convert JPEG to PNG?
Yes — up to 20 images. Convert JPG to PNG locally, then download all.
When should I convert JPG to PNG?
When a tool rejects JPG, you need a lossless editing master, or a workflow that expects PNG — even though the photo itself does not gain detail.
Is this JPG to PNG tool private?
Yes. Files stay on your device. No signup and no watermark.
JPG to PNG vs JPG to WebP?
PNG for lossless/editing compatibility. WebP when you want smaller web files and the destination supports WebP.
Can I convert JPG to PNG on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in mobile Safari or Chrome, pick photos, and download the PNG files.
