Getting a QR code that actually scans

Two things decide whether a code reads reliably: contrast and size. Keep the code dark on a light background — inverted codes confuse some older scanners — and aim for a printed width of at least 2 cm for a short URL, more if the code holds a lot of text. Leave the quiet zone around the edge alone; that white margin is part of the specification, not decoration.

Error correction controls how much of the code can be obscured and still decode. Medium is a sensible default. High is used automatically when you add a centre logo, because the logo covers part of the pattern and the extra redundancy is what lets the code survive it.

Print versus screen

Download the PNG for anything on a screen or for a quick print — it is generated at 1024 pixels, which is enough for a poster. Choose the SVG when the code is going into a design tool, a business card or professional print: it is vector, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size and will not develop soft edges when scaled up.

Nothing you enter here is transmitted anywhere. That matters most for the WiFi generator, where the code contains your network password in plain text — which is also why you should treat a printed WiFi code like a written-down password and put it somewhere you are happy for guests, but only guests, to see.
