Sentence Case Converter — Free Online
Rescue text that arrived in ALL CAPS or with random capitalisation. This converter lower cases everything, then capitalises the first letter of each sentence and the pronoun “I”, which is what you normally want for body copy. It updates live as you paste.
How to use the sentence case converter
- Paste the text you want to fix into the first box.
- Sentence case is applied straight away — check the preview below.
- Copy the cleaned-up version out.
When sentence case is the right choice
Sentence case — one capital at the start, everything else lower unless it is a name — is the default for body copy, meta descriptions, form labels, button text, email subject lines and support documentation. It is easier to read at small sizes than title case because the varying letter shapes give the eye more to grip, and most modern design systems have standardised on it for interface text for exactly that reason.
The most common job this tool gets used for is rescuing text that arrived in the wrong case: a paragraph pasted out of a PDF in full capitals, a spreadsheet column exported in caps, or a comment someone typed with caps lock on. Converting to sentence case restores something readable in one step instead of retyping it.
What a converter cannot know
Capitalisation of proper nouns is a judgement no rule can make reliably. When text arrives as “PARIS IN THE SPRING WITH SARAH”, nothing in the string marks Paris and Sarah as names, so a sentence case conversion returns “Paris in the spring with sarah” at best and “paris in the spring with sarah” at worst. Skim the result for names, places, brands, months and the pronoun “I” before you publish it.
Sentence boundaries are the other soft spot. A capital is placed after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, which means abbreviations such as “Dr.” or “e.g.” can trigger a capital in the middle of a sentence. Both quirks are quick to fix by eye and far quicker than retyping the paragraph.
Fixing PDF and email paste before you publish
PDF copy often arrives as ALL CAPS because the extractor treated every visual line as shouting, or because the source was a scanned form filled in capitals. Sentence case is the first cleanup step; pair it with Remove line breaks when the text is also hard-wrapped at every margin. That combination turns a block of unusable paste into something you can drop into a CMS or support ticket.
For product listings and meta descriptions, sentence case reads more naturally than title case in the body while title case stays on the headline. Run sentence case on the description, title case on the H1, and you cover both search snippets and on-page readability without retyping. Keep a copy of the original when legal quotes must preserve exact capitalisation.
