How the converters work
Your browser already contains the code needed to decode and re-encode common image formats — it uses it every time it displays a photo on a web page. These converters drive that same engine directly, which is why a conversion finishes in about a second and why the file never has to be uploaded to anyone's server.
HEIC is the exception. Apple's format is not natively readable in most browsers, so it is decoded here with a WebAssembly build of the reference decoder. That runs on your device too; it simply takes a moment longer on the first photo while the decoder loads.
Choosing a target format
JPG is the safe default for photographs: universally supported, small, and accepted by every upload form and printer. PNG is the right choice when you need sharp edges, screenshots or transparency, at the cost of a much larger file. WebP splits the difference and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, which makes it the best option for images destined for a website.
Converting between lossy formats re-compresses the image, so each round trip costs a little quality. Keep your original and convert from that rather than from a previous conversion, especially for anything you will print.
