BMP to PNG Converter — Free Online
Convert BMP bitmap files to PNG when a tool, website or pipeline refuses the bulky Windows format. BMP stores pixels with little or no compression, so PNG usually shrinks the file while keeping lossless quality and adding optional transparency support on the next edit. Up to twenty images convert locally — nothing is uploaded.
How to use the bmp to png converter
- Drop your .bmp files onto the converter above.
- Each bitmap is decoded and re-encoded as a lossless PNG in your browser.
- Download the PNG files one by one or all together.
Why BMP files are still everywhere
The BMP format dates to early Windows and remains the default export from some legacy scanners, industrial cameras, medical imaging workstations and old line-of-business software. It is essentially a header plus raw or lightly compressed pixel data — simple to write, expensive to store and email.
Modern browsers, CMS uploads, design tools and mobile apps often reject BMP outright because the format carries no standard transparency channel and files balloon compared with PNG or JPEG. Converting BMP to PNG is the usual first step before you upload to the web, drop into Figma, or attach to a ticket without blowing the size limit.
Conversion does not invent detail that was never captured. A fuzzy BMP stays a fuzzy PNG — but the PNG is easier to move around, supports alpha if you add it later in an editor, and is what downstream tools expect.
Lossless BMP to PNG without uploading
Both BMP and PNG can represent the same pixels losslessly when the source is 24-bit colour or 8-bit indexed. The canvas decode-and-encode path in this tab reads the bitmap, draws it once, and writes PNG — no generational JPEG loss, no cloud queue, no watermark on the download.
Batch up to twenty files for a folder of scanner exports. EXIF is not BMP’s strength anyway; re-encoding strips location and camera metadata you may not want on shared assets. Rotation is applied when embedded orientation exists so portraits do not arrive sideways.
Very large BMPs — tens of megabytes from an uncompressed screen capture — can stress browser memory. If a file fails, split the job or resize in an editor first. For web delivery after conversion, PNG to WebP may shrink further when the destination accepts WebP.
When PNG is the right next step
Choose PNG after BMP when you need lossless editing, transparency in a later step, or a format every tool accepts. Choose JPG or WebP instead when the image is a photograph and file size matters more than perfect pixels — BMP to PNG on a photo can produce a huge PNG with no visual gain over a high-quality JPEG.
Game assets, UI sprites and icon sources sometimes arrive as BMP from old toolchains. PNG preserves hard edges and flat colours better than JPEG for those assets. Screenshots saved as BMP from legacy Windows apps convert cleanly because they are flat colour regions rather than noisy camera photos.
If the BMP is 1-bit black and white from a fax or document scanner, PNG still works but the file may be larger than a compressed TIFF or PDF for archival. Use this converter when the immediate goal is compatibility, not long-term archive efficiency.
Frequently asked questions
Drop .bmp files in the box. Each converts to PNG locally in your browser — no account and no upload to a server.
No lossy step is added. PNG records the same pixels the BMP contained — lossless for typical 24-bit sources.
BMP often stores uncompressed or lightly compressed pixels. PNG usually shrinks the file while staying lossless.
Not automatically. Standard BMP has no alpha channel. You can add transparency in an editor after converting to PNG.
Yes — up to 20 BMP files at once. Download individually or all together when the batch finishes.
Yes. Files stay on your device. Safer than upload-based converters for internal scans and assets.
PNG for lossless and graphics with flat colour. JPG for photos when you need a much smaller file.
Yes in any modern browser. BMP is a Windows-leaning format but decodes fine on all platforms here.
Yes. Open this page in mobile Chrome or Safari, pick the bitmap files, and save the PNG downloads.
No watermark, no signup and no daily limit on conversions.
